Although our kitchen remodel is FAR from being completed (imagine half the ceiling gone, no back splash, and nasty laminate counters), this room is still one of my favorite places-and one I spend a great deal of time in. Even so-this year-it didn’t make sense for me to go crazy ‘decking it out’ with a whole bunch of Christmas decor-since we plan to pick up where we left off, after the holidays.

But…I did add a few touches of Christmas here and there, and today I’ll be sharing those with you, along with one of my favorite Christmas treats!

Rolled Sugar Cookies!

Every one remembers helping out with these yummy cookies when they were a kid-right?  I sure do!

And when I became the parent-Mel was right by my side- with frosting all over her face and in her hair-determined to create the most beautiful cookie ever for Santa!

Unfortunately, because Mel is so close to her due date-she will not be making the long trip to our house this year, for our family gathering on Christmas eve, so it will be up to me to make sure Santa get’s the VERY best (and prettiest) cookies!

Since we can’t spend Christmas eve or day with Mel and Andy-hubby and I decided to take off early this afternoon and make the trip to their house-to celebrate an ‘early’ Christmas this weekend!!

Mom will be staying over at our house to watch Bentley-and I’m sure she’ll enjoy a few of the Christmas treats I baked.  Which reminds me-I better hide some of these sugar cookies-or there won’t be any left for Santa!!!!

I’ll be unplugged this weekend-enjoying special moments with my family-but I will be back on Monday with my final Christmas tour!

And here’s the recipe for those buttery-and VERY yummy- Rolled Sugar Cookies:


2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons butter
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg white
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 1/2-2 cups powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 375.  In a medium bowl- mix together flour, baking powder and salt.  Set aside.  In a large bowl-beat butter and shortening until smooth.  Add sugar, and beat until fluffy.  Add egg, milk and vanilla.  Mix well.  Add flour mixture-and beat until combined.  Divide dough in half.  Wrap in Saran Wrap, and chill for 3 hours.

Roll dough 1/8 thick.  Cut dough with cookie cutters.  Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 7-8 minutes.  Remove and let cool.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl-combine egg white, lemon juice and 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar.  Beat well.  If not the right consistency-slowly add in the remaining 1/2 cup of powdered sugar.

When cookies are cool-frost and decorate.
