Hello-sweet friends!!!  Before I share my tale about finding a functional purpose for an old shutter I found on the farm-I have to give you an update on our beautiful grandson!!!

 
First off-the bad news…after speaking to Max’s pediatrician, we all determined that it was best if this grandma put aside her ENORMOUS excitement, and stayed home to take all of her medicine for bronchitis like a good girl.  I can’t tell you how hard it has been not to be there and hug and squeeze and kiss that precious little man-but it really is for the best.  This nasty flu bug going around is at epidemic proportions, here in Minnesota, and that little guy hasn’t had time to get use to his new environment-never mind build up his immunity!!!  
 
The good news is…Maxwell is doing MARVELOUS-(so are mommy and daddy), and hubby and I will making the trip up to see him next weekend!  And hopefully, I’ll be able to share some photo’s soon!!
 
With that said-I’m keeping myself VERY busy with a few projects!  
 
One of them is trying to get the kitchen somewhat organized, before demolish begins and the process of remodeling, which I know will probably drag on until this time NEXT year.
 
 
If you’ll remember-last weekend I began sorting through all of my treasures in the attic, the basement, and of course the potting shed.  Although things didn’t go quite as planned (I have a hard time letting go)-I was able to clear out some ‘stuff’, by either selling them, or putting them to good use.
 
Like this 1870’s shutter that found on the farm last summer!!
 
Did you know back in the day…that folks used whatever they had on hand to make paint??? Vegetables, tobacco juice-you name it-they used it.  The very idea AMAZES me-which is why I left this gorgeous piece-exactly how it was.  Of course it did require a great deal of cleaning (I guarantee there was 4 layers of dirt and grime on it), but let me tell you-for someone who is obsessed with history and all things old-the effort was well worth it!!!
 
 
It also didn’t take me long to figure out how I could make it a functional piece.  I always love mixing new(the baskets) with old, and now I have a place to not only display some of my vintage kitchen tools-but also my herbs and fruit!!!
 
 
 
I moved the antique washstand into the kitchen awhile back(for more storage-and mostly because I LOVE it), and recently I turned it into a coffee station.

I'm visitng from Grace at Home…your great idea for this shutter caught my eye right away…I have so many elements very similar to yours but I am racking my brain where I could put this in my very tiny L-shaped kitchen with not much usable wall space…hmmm. Anyway, I love how you have put this old shutter to such great use!

  25. I sure know what you mean about lack of wall space, Debby! The one I placed the shutter on is really the only large wall in the whole darn kitchen!!!
