Painting a Console Table

Hello, my sweet friends!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!!

Hubby turned 55 on Friday, so we spent most of our weekend celebrating with family and friends!

Since hubby wanted to enjoy a stress free-relaxing weekend, I made a promise to put off the wallpaper stripping project in our upstairs hallway (if you remember-the last time I stripped wallpaper in this house, an entire wall came crumbling down around my ankles!) as well as, not work with any power tools, or move any furniture for one whole day!

I’m happy to say that I kept my promise!

Of course, that promise did NOT include painting something.  Which is was all set to do on Friday afternoon, until hubby saw what I had decided to paint.

“Your mom is going to kill you,” he said.

Obviously, that was was a huge exaggeration!!! Mom would NEVER kill me-especially just for painting the console table she bought me for Christmas over fifteen years ago.

But even so-hubby’s words did give me pause.

The last thing I wanted to do was hurt mom’s feelings, just because I’d grown tired of the ‘grainy’ oak look of the table, and wanted to make a BIG change.   So yes, I started seconding guessing myself on whether painting the table was such a good idea after all.  Maybe I could just strip off the paint-put the table back where it was-and pretend it never happened.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to do any of that-because just as I was heading to the garage to find something to remove the paint-mom called.  Of course all she wanted to know was what time we were meeting for dinner, but it did give me an opportunity to drop a few hints about the table, and see what she thought.

Me:  “So……you know that console table you bought for me?”
Mom: “Oh yes!  I was just looking at that last weekend when I was over!  I sure wish I had gotten one of those for myself!  I just love the warm look of oak!”
(Strike one!)
Me: “Yes well, I’m not such a big fan of oak anymore-but I do love the table.”
Mom: “Well change it!”
(It took me a moment to respond, because I think my mouth dropped to the floor!)
Me: “So you wouldn’t mind if I painted it?”
Mom:  “Of course I wouldn’t mind, silly!  It’s your table!  You can paint whatever you want!  In fact-I don’t care if you paint Michael-just make sure he’s on time for his birthday dinner!”
(Have I told you how much I love my mom!!!)

So folks-I did just that!!  I painted it.  No, not hubby-the table!!!  And I just love how it turned it!

The best part was it only took a few hours to get the end result, because I used the same chalky paint on the table as I did on the fireplace.  Which meant no sanding-and no priming!!  I still can’t believe that it’s possible-but it really is!!!!

Here’s a quick tutorial on how I did it:

First, I painted a light base coat of American Decor chalky paint in Everlasting.  The reason I did this extra step was because I didn’t want the wood grain to bleed through.  I’m not sure if that was necessary-but it worked, so that’s all that mattered!

I gave it a light sanding after it dried.

I did the same thing with the drawers.

Once the paint was dry-I painted the entire console table (excluding the drawers) Relic chalk paint-also by American Decor.  It took two coats (with a light sanding in between) before I had the look I wanted.  Then I sanded down the corners legs to give it a distressed look.  For the drawers, I simply taped  around the recessed part and spray painted it with two coats of Krylon Metallic Shimmer in Silver.  I also painted the knobs the same color!!!

The last step was two coats of wax and a little bit of buffing!  And viola!  A brand new look for my old console table!!

Mom stopped over later that night, and she absolutely LOVED how the table turned out!!!
