Brats are a MUST have here in our neck of the woods during the summer months!

Everyone around here has their own special way of cooking them.

And even more, ways to eat to them.

Some like them with sauerkraut.

Others like them with just ketchup.

Others like them with just mustard.

And then you’ve got those crazy folks who like EVERYTHING.

Regardless of how you like them, brats really are a yummy addition to any summer family get together.

But who wants to spend all their time in front of the grill?

Certainly not me.

Which is why I absolutely love this recipe.

I do put the brats on the grill just to sear them, but then in the slow cooker, they go.

And I’m free to visit until we are ready to eat.

I hope you enjoy these juicy flavor-packed brats as much as we do!

  • 12 brats
  • 12 oz bottled beer-(I use dark for more flavor)
  • 1 largeq onion sliced thinly
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tbsp prepared yellow mustard
  • water to cover

  1. Heat beer, onion, ketchup, barbecue sauce and mustard in a slow cooker.

Preheat grill to medium-high heat (325). Place bratwurst on a grill. Cook on one side for 3-5 minutes-and turn over-(being careful not to poke or burn brat). Allow cooking for another 3-5 minutes or until juice begins to seep from the brat. Remove immediately! Brats will not be fully cooked-just seared on the outside.

Place brats into the crock pot and add water until brats are completely covered. Simmer for 1-2 hours on high, or 4-6 hours on low. Serve in bratwurst buns, with sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, and onions.
